Hello Gary,
I tend to shy away from the topic of “supplements” because the evidence that most of these things are effective is usually inconclusive. There’s a lot of marketing hype and misrepresentations of “clinical studies” out there. It is easy to measure that a supplement is in your body/blood stream after ingesting it but that means very little. The big questions are: (1) was your body able to absorb it and (2) did it work?
My understanding is that there is no solid proof that Glucosamine works. However, many MDs recommend it and they may well be right. Don’t know of any significant side effects, although if you are allergic to shell fish you should ask your doctor if it is a safe supplement for you.
Final note, for those suffering from arthritis/joint denegation especially in larger joints - knees, hips, back. Strengthening the stabilization muscles that support those joints and weight loss are probably the most effective solutions available at least this side of joint replacement.
Probably not as helpful as you hoped for but honest and I think accurate. If you would like, I can take you though some simple stabilization exercises to strengthen your joints. Just drop me a line at the gym.
Cheers,
Mike Carville
I have used glucosamine/chondroitin for several years and feel it has helped me. I have also lost about 30 pounds over the last 8 months and my back and knees definitely feel heathier.

What is the current thinking regarding using glucosamine for joint health?
