Member Forum > What size Kettlebell?

Started playing around with the kettlebells. What size should I use?

February 13, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKevin S

Hello Kevin,

Kettlebells come in several sizes: 8lbs, 12lbs, 18lbs, 26lbs, 35lbs, 44lbs, 53lbs, 70lbs, 80lbs, 88lbs, 97lbs and for super strong men and women a 105lb Kettlebell called the Beast!

Because we generally don’t train to failure, the sizing jump from one bell to the next is bigger than standard dumbbells. We adjust reps down when going up to the next size and then gradually build up the reps again with the heavier bell.

Your technique and exercise selection usually determine the size bell you use. In fact the goal is to focus on technique more than weight. The average man generally begins with a 26 to 35 pound bell. It does not sound like a lot but believe me, it will feel a lot heavier than you think! Most men will eventually progress to a 44 or 53 pound bell. The 53 is standard issue in the Russian military.

The average woman usually starts with a 12 to 18 pound bell. A strong woman can use a 26-pounder. Some women will advance to a 35 pound bell and a few hard women will go beyond.

Kettlebells can provide tremendous conditioning, strength and fat loss. It is very important to learn good technique so you don’t get injured. If you are interested in learning to safely use Kettlebells and get great results then you can book a session with me or Eric and in about 90 minutes you’ll learn the fundamental lifts.

Cheers, Mike
